The Last of Us Concept Art: From Game to Series with Chromatic Studio

The Last of Us has become a defining reference in narrative-driven worldbuilding across games and television. With the release of Season 2 of the HBO series, the adaptation now moves into the complex emotional territory of the second game.

A World Built Through Continuity and Visual Storytelling

The strength of The Last of Us lies in its consistency across mediums. From The last of us games to the HBO adaptation, the same principles guide its visual development. Environment design, lighting, and cinematic composition are used to support grounded storytelling and emotional weight.

This continuity is not accidental. It comes from a deep understanding of the world’s rules and tone. Its visual power comes from nature reclaiming what was lost, where decay becomes the foundation for something unexpectedly beautiful.

The TLOU franchise has always been deeply committed to the concept art. Careful research into natural growth and destruction laid the groundwork for that visual language, and the Emmy-nominated series reflects this approach.

A Long-Term Creative Relationship with Chromatic Studio

Chromatic Studio’s connection to The Last of Us spans several stages of the franchise. Before founding the studio, Jad Saber, now Creative Director at Chromatic Studio, and Simeon Schaffner, now Art Director, both worked as concept artists on The Last of Us Part II. This early involvement contributed to a direct understanding of the IP’s visual language and storytelling techniques.

The relationship continued as Chromatic Studio later contributed to the visual development of the TLOU multiplayer project set in the same universe. Although the project was canceled, it extended the studio’s work on environment design and worldbuilding within the franchise.

More recently, Chromatic Studio supported post-production on Season 2 of the HBO series. Working under VFX Supervisor Alex Wang, our team provided keyframe images and environment design to help translate this iconic story to the screen. This included a strong focus on lighting, weather, grounded and believable destruction, credible overgrowth and cinematic storytelling. The goal was to give the best possible reference to the VFX teams to go from.
